Unlocking Industrial Potential: DOST's Intelligent Data Analysis System ( IDAS) Empowers Philippine Industries

For some local industries, evaluating diverse product issues can be challenging. However, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has developed a solution: the Intelligent Data Analysis System (IDAS) version 1.0. This cutting-edge system promises to revolutionize materials analysis, providing local industries with the tools and insights needed to enhance product quality, streamline processes, and drive innovation.

Through AI, underlying patterns of interrelations can be revealed among samples or materials by simultaneously modeling all the datasets. This strengthens failure and defect analyses of materials, as well as advanced characterization and profiling of substances in the perspectives of quality assurance and Industry 4.0.

IDAS Software V.01 was initially used by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), where they used a rapid test method to confirm the composition of seized drugs. The Intelligent profiling of drug products was achieved by clustering the principal component analysis (PCA) models, which helped in the simultaneous differentiation of various drug formulations. The analysis helped determine and attribute the differences in drug performances, examine active component forms; identify additives and byproducts, and process impurities. The technology streamlined the verification of seized drugs by PDEA.

The advantage of this innovation is that not only does it provide a suitable alternative test method for drug verification, but it also serves as an AI or Machine Learning (ML) offering, providing easy access to information, such as production method or source. IDAS V.01 has a wide range of potential applications in pharmaceuticals, semiconductors and electronics, post-harvest processing, food manufacturing, and other industries.

IDAS has undergone validation by analyzing the seized drugs using the Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (TOFSIMS), a surface analysis technique used in testing to provide detailed chemical information about the outermost layer of a material. The researchers tested at least 100 samples of seized drugs with known backgrounds. Validation of the software was carried out by the IDAS project team at DOST-Advanced Science and Technology Institute (ASTI).

Monsada said that IDAS displays great potential as a tool for machine learning supporting the industry and academia in the treatment of big data, maximizing the use of information, for instance in safety, consumer protection, research and development, increased productivity and others.

IDAS was among the twenty-three technologies which were showcased in the recently concluded Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025, in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.
